Expansive soil, also know as a fatty clay, is a highly plastic soil with swelling and contracting across changing soil moisture contents. In Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri, foundation issues attribute to these type of soil movements.

The cracking, occurring on the ground surface during dry Seasons, is also evident in the soil below foundation walls, footings, concrete slabs, and crawlspace piers.  In times of heavy moisture,  the expansive clay reacts to swell.  Keep in mind. Three feet of expansive soil can generate enough swell pressure to lift a 37 ton truck 2 inches!  The result is that structural members are performing with a ever changing amount of soil support/pressure.

Homes and buildings are hard pressed to withstand these differential movements.  The result is settlement.  Settlement occurs in three basic forms and can range anywhere from very minor to major.
