Because a dry crawl-space or slab is most desirable for your home, it is important to promote water movement away from the footing.  This can be accomplished by building up dirt around the exterior foundation to prevent pooling and absorption of groundwater.

Another option is to develop a yard swale in locations with hillsides.  The swale looks like an open shallow ditch that redirects and helps remove water to control erosion.
